READ
John 1:1–17
Begin by reading John without stopping.
Then go back and read the opening words again.
"In the beginning..."
Stop there.
You have heard those words before this week.
Return to Genesis 1:1.
Now place these passages beside one another:
Genesis 1:1–6:8
Isaiah 42:5–43:10
John 1:1–17
LOOK ACROSS THE READINGS
What words, ideas, or images appear in more than one passage?
What does Genesis help you notice in Isaiah?
What does Genesis help you notice in John?
Does Isaiah help you see anything in Genesis differently?
What questions do you now have that you didn't have on Monday?
FINALLY
If someone asked you:
"Why do you think these three readings were placed together?"
What could you show them from the Scriptures themselves?
You don't need to have everything figured out.
Write down what you see and the questions you still have.
CLOSING
Tomorrow is Shabbat.
You have already spent the week in the Scriptures you will hear presented.
Keep your Bible open as you listen. Notice what you recognize. Notice what you didn't see. And when something causes you to wonder, return to the text.
That is part of learning to read Scripture well.
