When the Heavens Are Shaken
READ: Isaiah 13:10, 13; Joel 2:10, 30–31
Today, we’re going to look at something that often raises questions when we study prophecy.
Isaiah describes the sun and moon going dark, the stars losing their light, and the heavens and earth being shaken.
What does all of that mean?
Before we turn to someone else’s explanation, let’s see what Scripture tells us.
Open your Bible.
Read Isaiah 13:10 and 13.
What changes does Isaiah describe?
Now turn to Joel 2:10 and 30–31.
Do you notice any similarities?
Think about this for a moment. We depend on the sun, moon, and stars for light, seasons, and a sense of order.
What would it communicate if even these things were shaken?
And remember, Isaiah is speaking about Babylon. What did Babylon believe about its own strength and security?
In your journal: What do these passages teach you about the things people believe will always be there?
You don’t need to settle every question about prophecy today. Write down anything you’re still wondering about.
Tomorrow, we’ll consider how Scripture tells us to respond to YHWH’s warnings.
