When Strength Fails
READ: Isaiah 13:7–8, 14–16
When we think about powerful kingdoms, we often think about their armies, wealth, and ability to protect themselves.
But look at what Isaiah describes when judgment comes.
Open your Bible.
Read Isaiah 13:7–8.
Notice what happens to people’s hands and hearts. What do you think Isaiah is communicating through those descriptions?
Now look at verse 14.
Isaiah compares the people to a gazelle and sheep without a shepherd.
Why do you think he uses those pictures? What do they tell us about the people’s situation?
Finally, read verses 15–16.
These are difficult verses. They describe terrible suffering during war, including the suffering of families.
I want you to consider something: When powerful kingdoms fall, who pays the price?
In your journal: Write down what these passages reveal about the things people depend upon for strength and security.
Tomorrow, we’ll look at why YHWH brings this judgment in the first place.
