Context: Widen the Lens
We can understand the words of a verse and still miss what the writer is saying if we ignore what surrounds it. Today we're going to widen the lens and let Paul's own argument help us understand Paul.
TODAY’S STUDY
1. Read Romans 12:1–8. Notice how verses 3–8 fit with what Paul has already said in verses 1–2.
2. Now notice the “therefore” in verse 1. Read Romans 11:33–36. What has Paul just said about God before telling us how we should live?
3. Return to Romans 12:3–8 and your questions from yesterday. Does this larger context answer, change, or sharpen any of them?
CLOSING
Context teaches us humility. Before deciding, “This is what this verse means,” we first ask, “What was Paul actually saying?”
